Kennedy, 21, won in 9.98 seconds (-0.7), breaking a record long held by sprinters from North America and the Caribbean and becoming the first person to do it since Patrick Johnson’s 9.93 Australian mark in 2003.
Queenslander Kennedy overtook South Africa’s Bayanda Wazala and Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who held the African 100-meter record, to take second and third place, respectively, in Nairobi.
21-year-old Lachlan Kennedy was born in Brisbane on November 4, 2003 and stands 5 feet 6 inches tall. He attended St. Joseph’s College in Gregory Terrace. He studied engineering and design at the University of Queensland.
Alongside father Adam and mother Rachael, a former talented netballer, the sprinter’s core group of support includes his coach Andrew Iselin and exercise physiologist Matt Crear, girlfriend Sophie Thou, as well as siblings Emily and brother Henry who have always stood up for their elder brother.
Kennedy’s support network and especially his mother have helped him manage type one diabetes, which requires monitoring of blood sugar levels and adequate nutrition.
After playing rugby for a decade, and reaching junior representative level, Lachlan Kennedy switched to athletics and within two years would represent Australia at the World U20 Championships in 2022 and over the next couple of years he slashed his 100m and 200m bests down to 10.20 in the 100m – top-20 Australian all-time.

Before turning his focus to sports, he represented Australia in junior international rugby union and played for Brisbane junior rugby union representative teams. He was given a type 1 diabetes diagnosis in 2018.
Lachlan Kennedy career
With a time of 39.30 seconds, Lachlan Kennedy’s squad, the Australian U20 4×100-meter relay team, broke the 12-year-old Australian U20 4×100-meter relay record in 2022. At the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, he competed on behalf of Australia. He finished second behind his countryman Calab Law in the 100-meter race at the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara in November 2023.
He achieved new senior Australian and Oceania records and tied the tenth fastest time ever on January 25, 2025, in Canberra, where he raced 60 meters in 6.52 seconds, matching the Australian record. Later that day, he ran the same distance in 6.43 seconds (+1.6).
Kennedy achieved a new 100-meter personal best on January 26, 2025, in 10.17 seconds while racing against a wind speed of -1.0 m/s. Kennedy won the 60-meter event at the Australian short-track championships in February 2025 in Sydney, with a timing of 6.51 seconds.
He won the Perth Classic 100m on March 1, 2025, in 10.03 seconds (+1.1), tying Matt Shirvington for third place on the Australian all-time list. On March 29, 2025, he ran a personal best time of 20.26 seconds to win the 200-meter race at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne, ahead of fellow countryman Gout Gout.
On May 31, 2025, he won the 100-meter race at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, setting a new personal record of 9.98 seconds.
