So far, over 20 HBCU products have made it into the halls of Canton throughout the years.

HBCU and the NFL

While there have been many HBCU players who have represented some of the greatest talents to have ever played the game like Sweetness (Walter Payton), The Bullet (Bob Hayes) and Deacon (Jones), the numbers have run dry in recent years.

Although there is no shortage of black football talents, only a few of those talents have opted to play for HBCU schools. As such, this has made Deion Sanders’ Jackson State program very enticing for such players looking to bring back the old glory.

Miller shared about why he didn’t go pro last year saying:

I did think about going pro last year. I realized those seasons before last year were COVID-19 seasons and the draft class was going to be huge. I decided to come back one more year, learn and develop the game more and make sure I dominate the season. Now, I am ready to go and take the next step.”

Whether they like it or not. … Your talent needs to come back home. You need to play for your people. You need to represent our people.”

James Houston paving the way

Jack Houston, Millers former teammate has achieved an early-career success in the NFL and it has proved optimistic for Miller. Houston recorded eight sacks, which is the second-highest total among rookies in the 2022 season.
