Recently, a gruesome case has emerged from Kolkata’s Tollygunge area, where the severed head of a woman was discovered in a garbage dump. Police investigations revealed that the victim was allegedly murdered by her brother-in-law, Atiur Rahman Laskar of Diamond Harbour, after she rejected his advances. Within 24 hours of the gruesome discovery, the Kolkata Police apprehended Laskar, from his native village in Basuldanga, Diamond Harbour, South 24 Parganas district after going through CCTV footage and using sniffer dogs to track him down.

The chilling discovery of a severed head in a garbage dump near Graham Road on Friday sent shockwaves through the community, triggering widespread panic. The horror deepened a day later when the torso and lower portion of the woman’s body were found near a pond in the Regent Park area, leaving residents of the middle-class neighborhood reeling with fear and disbelief.

Why Laskar murdered his sister-in-law?

During interrogation, age 35 Laskar who is a Muslim by religion reportedly confessed to the heinous crime, admitting that he killed the woman, who had been estranged from her husband for two years. The victim, a domestic worker in the Regent Park area, used to travel to work daily with Laskar, who also worked in Tollygunge. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Bidisha Kalita, Laskar harbored romantic feelings for the woman, and her rejection, coupled with her decision to avoid him and block his phone number, enraged him further.

On Thursday evening, after her workday ended, Laskar allegedly coerced the victim into accompanying him to an under-construction building, where he strangled her, beheaded her, and dismembered her body into three parts. The severed head was discovered near Graham Road on Friday, while the torso and lower body were recovered the next day from a pond in Regent Park.

The murder of the victim, believed to be around 35–40 years old, has left the neighborhood in southern Kolkata in shock and disbelief. Authorities are investigating whether others were involved in the crime. Initially, police speculated that the victim might have been in a relationship with the accused and that complications from their association could have led to the murder. The brutal nature of the crime has shaken the middle-class community and sparked widespread outrage.
