A controversy at the Asian Games 2023
Swapna Barman, who made headlines across the nation in 2018 after earning a record-breaking amount of gold medals in the women’s heptathlon at the Asian Games in Jakarta, claimed on Monday morning that she was defeated by a transgender lady. Regarding the Indian delegation to the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in 2023, this raised a big uproar.
Barman levelled serious allegations against Nandini Agasara after the latter won the bronze medal in the women’s heptathlon at the ongoing Asian Games in China. This sparked a debate on Monday that compelled Barman to take down the X (formerly Twitter) post in which she claimed Nandini was transgender.
Swapna wrote (in a now deleted post):
I have lost my Asian Games medal to a transgender woman at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. I want my medal back as it is against the rules of our athletics. Help me and support me please.”
Meanwhile Nandini responded, as per The Times of India report:
“I don’t understand what’s the issue with her (Swapna)?”
Indian athlete Swapna Burman who missed out on a Bronze Medal at the Asian Games claims she missed out because of a transgender.
According to people on social media, it appears Burman is claiming Nandini Agasara (in the video who won the Bronze for India) is transgender. pic.twitter.com/JTRYwZ3UAy
