At the 62nd National Open Athletics Championships held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Manikanta Hoblidhar set a new national record in the men’s 100-meter race.

Manikanta accomplished the record-breaking accomplishment during the semifinal heats, finishing the race in a time-setting 10.23 seconds.

This achievement erased the previous record set by Amiya Mallick (10.26s) in 2016. It’s interesting to note that Mallick, an athlete from Odisha, competed in the heats on the same day as Manikanta Hoblidhar and placed fourth with a time of 10.58 seconds.

Manikanta, who had a faultless race plan, stormed ahead of the competitors early on and finished with a strong sprint. The 21-year-old sprinter expressed his long-standing aspiration to break the national 100-meter record, stating,

I felt that I could break the record in this event. However, I thought I would get the timing in the final, not the semifinal.

With this timing, Manikanta Hoblidhar won heat three of the semi-finals, earning him a spot in the championship match. Manikanta had previously qualified for the semifinals in the preliminary heats by clocking a time of 10.50 seconds. When it came to the men’s 100, Manikanta won both the preliminary and semifinal rounds. On October 12 at 4 p.m. IST, the event’s final will take place.

Manikanta Hoblidhar is an Indian soldier and an athlete. He has been in the news because he recently broke the men’s 100-meter race record with a time-setting 10.23 seconds.

Many people also know him as HH Manikanta. He was born on 29 November 2001 in Udupi, Karnataka.

In Hyderabad, Manikanta received training from the Artillery Center. Aboobacker, who took home a silver medal with the 4x400m relay team at the 2006 Asian Games, is currently his coach. He enlisted in the Army in 2020 and currently serves as a sepoy.

Manikanta Hoblidhar is currently 21 years old.

His career

Manikanta Hoblidhar was hired by MEG two years ago, and since then, he has advanced quickly. Manikanta’s season-opening time was between 10.6 and 10.7 seconds. However, he demonstrated his form at the InterServices competition in Hyderabad, when he ran a 10.31 to take home the gold.

When he raced in the Resisprint International (a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger competition) in Switzerland in July 2022, he made history by becoming the first South Asian sprinter to run 100 meters in under 10 seconds.
