In the Jamaican Olympic trials on Friday, Kishane Thompson won the 100 meters in 9.77 seconds, tying for the tenth fastest time in the history of the competition.
The 22-year-old young athlete, who is in only his second season as a professional, had not participated in any races this year until the trials. He is still the fourth fastest Jamaican in history, however, behind Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, and Asafa Powell.

Kishane Thompson is a track and field athlete who was born on July 17, 2001. The 22-year-old stands 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) tall and weighs 77 kg (170 lb).
Thompson, who is coached by Stephen Francis at MVP Track and Field Club, clocked a world-leading time of 9.77 seconds to secure victory in the event andearlier in the semi-finals, he set a personal best of 9.82 seconds.

Thompson, 22, now ranks as the fourth fastest Jamaican man ever and has also seized the world lead from Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya, who ran 9.79 earlier in the month.

A look at Kishane Thompson’s career so far
Thompson defeated Oblique Seville, an Olympic semifinalist from Tokyo who had defeated Noah Lyles earlier in the year.
Thompson, a member of the MVP Track Club, competed in the June 2023 Jamaica national trials. The sprinter completed his qualifying heat in 9.91 seconds for the 100 meters. However, unfortunately, before the semifinals, the athlete pulled out of the competition.
At the Monaco 100 meters last year, the sprinter made his Diamond League debut by finishing fifth in 10.04 seconds. He finished second at the Diamond League competition in Xiamen, China, in September 2023, cutting his personal best time in the 100 meters to 9.85 seconds.
On June 27, 2024, in Kingston, Jamaica, he ran a time of 9.82 seconds in the 100 meters during the first round of the Jamaican Olympic trials. In the subsequent final, he won the Jamaican national championship in a time that was a new personal best of 9.77 seconds.
