If you’re not familiar, let us tell you, during the cross-country meet in Texas, a 16-year-old sophomore, Angel Hernandez from Chisholm Trail High School, collapsed and passed away shortly after achieving a new personal record in a 5K race.

Eyewitness Recounted 

For unversed, this heartbreaking incident occurred on October 13 in Haltom City, Tarrant County. Eyewitnesses recounted that after crossing the finish line, Angel Hernandez collapsed, prompting concern from his friends who escorted him to a nearby water fountain.

Tragically, he collapsed once more, and he was swiftly transported to a local hospital, where he tragically lost his life just an hour later.

Hernandez’s Coach 

Brent Brevard, who had coached Hernandez at Chisholm Trail High School in the previous year before retiring, spoke highly of him, describing him as an exemplary student-athlete. He emphasized Angel’s dedication, teamwork, and commitment to both his academics and sports.

Cause of Collapse 

Despite the passage of time, friends and family remain uncertain about the cause of Hernandez’s collapse, which occurred after one of his finest races.

His funeral, as reported by KHOU, took place on Friday, when his family was presented with a varsity letter jacket. Subsequently, a moment of silence in his honor was observed at the high school’s homecoming football game on the same evening.

The late teenager also had a deep passion for martial arts, as noted in his obituary, participating in competitions across the country.

Angel’s Karate Coach 

Ashley Wood, his karate coach, has been providing support to his devastated teammates since his untimely passing, highlighting that there were no apparent signs of illness before his collapse.

To assist Hernandez’s family with funeral expenses, Wood initiated a GoFundMe campaign.

Reflecting on the loss, she expressed, “It’s really hard. We’ll never get over it. We’ll never forget him. He’s going to be missed here, but he’s going to be loved always.”

Angel Hernandez is survived by his parents, Antonio and Elsie Hernandez, as well as his younger brother, Mark Hernandez.
