Who is Ancy Sojan?
The U21 record holder for the women’s long jump, Ancy, is a native of Thrissur, Kerala and was born on March 1, 2001. She won four gold medals in the Khelo India Youth Games in the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump, and 4×100-meter relay competitions. For a few seasons, Ancy has excelled at jumping at the domestic level, but she has yet to achieve success abroad.
Sojan, all of 55kg and a little above five feet tall, is usually bursting with nervous energy.
At the Asian Championship in Thailand, Ancy most recently finished fourth with a leap of 6.41 metres. Ancy, has a younger brother and sister, attributes her success to the sacrifices of her parents and coach Sanoj, popularly known as Kannan. Years ago, Sojan was a budding athlete and classmate of Olympian P Ramachandran at the Central UP School at Nattika in Thrissur.
With her fifth effort, Ancy surpassed her previous day’s record of 6.56m. With her second try, which was timed at 6.49m, she successfully laid the marker early. The 22-year-old made a name for herself early on in the field with her performances. At the Khelo India Youth Games, she jumped 6.36 metres, shattering the previous record for the country’s under-21 long jumpers.
