Ajay Kumar Saroj, an Indian middle-distance runner, was born on May 1, 1997 in Allahabad, India.

The 26-year-old has three sisters and three brothers, and is the youngest. His mother is a homemaker, and his father is a farmer. He is a Hindu by religion.

Saroj started the athletics when he was 15 years old. His family urged him to start doing athletics at an early age after noticing his lack of interest in academics. He liked to watch the Olympics on television to better understand athletics. He was a voracious learner.

Saroj switched his early career focus from 400m to 1500m and 800m on the recommendation of his coach. Currently, he is receiving assistance from the GoSports Foundation as part of the GoSports Long Term Athlete Development Programme.

Ajay Kumar Saroj won gold in the 1500-meter race at the South Asian Games in 2016 and the Asian Athletics Championships in 2017. At the South Asian Games in 2019 in the 1500-meter race, Ajay Kumar Saroj also took home a gold medal.

Because choosing UP would have entailed going through the “hassle of trials,” as the long-distance runner put it, Saroj chose to represent Assam. Saroj was then chosen for the UP team by P K Shrivastava, the treasurer of the Athletics Federation of India and a member of the UP Athletics Association.

Support from Shrivastava and Ajith came in irregular bursts as Saroj relocated to Bengaluru in 2013. At the Youth Olympics in Nanjing in 2014, when he placed sixth, Saroj received his first significant break.
