Albertson lost her life on Friday morning while riding as a passenger in a 2018 GMC Terrain driven by Tony Stewart, a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. Before her championship race on Saturday, the accident happened at about 11.30 a.m. in Jackson County, Indiana, which is located just south of Seymour.

Her 31-year-old fiancé Jacob Kelly was apparently operating the SUV when a black 2016 Chevrolet Malibu drew up in the right lane. According to Indiana State Police, both vehicles accelerated and refused to let the other vehicle pass. The SUV apparently collided with the Malibu, which was being driven by a 22-year-old, after veering into the same lane as it. This caused the SUV to flip over. Albertson, who was due to marry in a few months, was ejected from the car.

She was transported by air to the University of Louisville Hospital, where authorities say she passed away as a result of the collision’s injuries. Kelly and the Malibu’s driver, meantime, were being treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

Social internet is flooded with tributes.

Albertson finished her final race on August 11, and her team manager Stewart announced her passing on Friday night. “Today, I lost a teammate. @AshDogRacing had an infectious personality and could light up any room,” he wrote in a social media post. “She was a talented race car driver who lost her life in a crash caused by road rage. I’ve also experienced road rage in the past. Losing her serves as a stark reminder of how short life is. Please join me in praying for her family and friends.”

Todd Albertson, Ashlea’s distraught father, told WTHR in Indianapolis that they wanted the event to go on as planned at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. Her father said Society has to improve and everyone needs to take better care of each other. She died on a highway instead of a racetrack, as they had feared because they were unable to manage their rage. It is her daughter. She is a sister and everyone here considers her a friend, he said on Saturday.
