Before leaving the position in 2017, Panagariya, an economist with an American education but Indian origin, led the government’s principal policy think tank. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally chose him to head the committee that would replace the former planning commission, which was in charge of creating five-year economic plans for the Soviet Union.
Every five years, the federal government appoints a Finance Commission to advise on subjects pertaining to public finances and to provide recommendations about the distribution of taxes between the federal and state governments. Currently, the states in India receive 42% of federal taxes.

Who is Arvind Panagariya?
Arvind Panagariya is a renowned Indian-American economist. He has been in the news because he was appointed chairman of the newly formed Finance Commission.
He was born on 30 September 1952 in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, India. His father’s name is Baloo Lal Panagariya, a journalist and writer. He also has one brother named Dr. Ashok Panagariya, a renowned neurologist and medical researcher.
After completing his schooling, Arvind Panagariya did his graduation and post-graduation at Rajasthan University. Additionally, he has a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University, where he was advised by William Hoban Branson and Peter Kenen.
He is married, and his wife’s name is Amita. The couple also has two sons named Ananth Hirsh, a comic book author, and Ajay, a technologist and entrepreneur.
He is currently 71 years old.
His career
Arvind Panagariya held the position of Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University after serving as an Economics Professor at the University of Maryland.
His long career includes consulting positions with major organizations such as the World Bank, IMF, WTO, and UNCTAD, as well as posts as Chief Economist at the Asian Development Bank.
Arvind Panagariya was honored with the Eccles Prize for Excellence in Economic Writing for his co-authored works, which included the influential books “Why Growth Matters” and “India: The Emerging Giant.” His advocacy for trade liberalization and privatization in India for economic growth is evident in his influential papers for the World Bank and IMF.
In addition to his academic career, he has appeared in the media, presented a program on Bloomberg TV India, and written essays for well-known journals including the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times.
Recipient of the 2012 Padma Bhushan, he served in important capacities for India, including as vice-chairman of NITI Aayog and serving as India’s G20 delegate.
