American-Indian Arun Srinivas Subramanian was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Indian immigrant parents. His parents immigrated to the US from India in 1979, a few months before his birth. His mother worked as a bookkeeper, and his father as a control systems engineer at several companies. He graduated from the Columbia Law School in 2004 with a Juris Doctor degree after earning a Bachelor of Arts from Case Western Reserve University in 2001.

Arun Srinivas Subramanian career
Arun Srinivas Subramanian worked for Judge Dennis Jacobs of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit as a law clerk from 2004 to 2005. He worked as a law clerk for Judge Gerard E. Lynch of the Southern District of New York United States District Court from 2005 to 2006, and for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the United States Supreme Court from 2006 to 2007.
He worked as a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP’s white shoe law firm in New York City from 2007 until 2023, specializing in bankruptcy and business litigation.
Senator Chuck Schumer suggested Subramanian to President Joe Biden. In accordance with United States Senate Rule XXXI, Paragraph 6, his nomination was returned to the President on January 3, 2023, on September 2, 2022.
On January 23, 2023, he was nominated again. His nomination was reported out of committee on February 9, 2023, with a vote of 16 to 5. The Senate voted 58–37 on March 7, 2023, to invoke cloture on his appointment. His nomination was approved later that day by a vote of 59–37. April 13, 2023, was the date when he earned his judicial commission. He is the first judge of South Asian descent to hold a position on the Southern District of New York United States District Court.
