Authorities have identified a 21-year-old man named Artur A. as the gunman responsible for the deadly school shooting in Graz, Austria. Artur, who is a former student of BORG Dreierschutzengasse high school, reportedly returned to his old classroom armed with a shotgun and a semi-automatic Glock pistol before shooting indiscriminately. Artur opened fire at the school premises and killed ten students while injuring several others and eventually turning the gun on himself.
Reason behind the shooting
As of now, the authorities have not discovered the official motive behind the shooting. However, reports from Austrian media outlets suggested that Artur felt like he was a victim of bullying during his school years. Artur’s mother reportedly found a suicide note at their residence that included a farewell to his parents. The note, however, did not offer any explanation for his actions.
Investigators also recovered a non-functional pipe bomb and a video message that Artur had sent to his mother before the attack. In the video message, Artur reportedly declared his plan to attack the school. Artur’s mother reportedly saw the video 24 minutes after it was uploaded and immediately called the police.

Artur A biography and age
Artur A. was an Austrian citizen from the Graz-Umgebung district who was identified as the gunman in the recent Austria School Shooting but his religion hasn’t been disclosed yet. He was 21-years-old at the time of his death and previously attended BORG Dreierschutzengasse but never completed his education there. Artur reportedly has no prior criminal record and legally owned both weapons used in the attack. He had obtained a firearms ownership card but did not possess a firearms carrying license.
Identified as Artur A, 21, the young man was a serial school drop-out who had attended IT classes at the college where the massacre took place but failed to complete the course.
Artur grew up in the east of Styria, southern Austria, but moved with his mother and several older brothers to a suburb of Graz, the state’s capital, at the end of the 2010s.
He appears to have registered at a business college and then at a technical college before he moved to the Borg Dreierschützengasse school, but in 2022 he dropped out of that school too and signed on with the state’s labour market service, which aims to get jobseekers into work.
He had not opened a single social media profile and investigators believed he had had only one friend.
Artur acted alone and took his own life in a toilet at the school in Graz, police said and it is said he had been a victim of bullying.
The attacker carried a pistol and a shotgun and opened fire on pupils in two classrooms, one of which had once been his classroom and he legally owned the weapons.

Artur A. was born to an Austrian mother and a father of Armenian descent. Sadly, his parents had separated and Artur lived with his mother and brother.

A tragic shooting took place in Austria on Tuesday morning, June 10, 2025, just after 10:00 AM local time. An unidentified gunman attacked a local Dreierschützengasse secondary school in northwest Graz. According to reports, students at the school initially mistook the sound of gunfire for construction noise or firecrackers. However, teachers quickly locked classrooms, and students fled in panic as the shooting unfolded.

One of the school’s religious studies teachers, Paul Nitsche, reported that he heard a loud bang followed by the clatter of bullet casings. While running for his life, he caught a glimpse of the gunman and witnessed the aftermath while passing a student lying on the floor. Meanwhile, local residents Franz and Astrid, who live next to the school, also reported hearing 30 to 40 gunshots. Franz stated that he saw a student at a window who was contemplating a jump before retreating inside.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, emergency services responded swiftly and arrived on the scene. Cobra tactical units and over 300 officers seemingly managed to bring the situation under control within 17 minutes. According to reports, the shooter ended his own life in a school bathroom.
Austria School Shooting victims
The tragic shooting killed a total of nine students between the ages of 14 to 17 years old—six girls and three boys. One of the school’s teachers who got injured from the shooting also died later in the hospital. Notably, all of the victims were Austrian citizens except one Polish student. Besides the deceased victims, twelve others were also injured. Notably, the injured people consisted of eight Austrians, two Romanians, and one Iranian.
The nine dead students were aged between 14 and 17 and one was a Polish citizen, another two had Bosnian ethnicity but Austrian citizenship.
Past School Shootings in Austria
Although Austria has strict gun regulations, it has a relatively high rate of firearm ownership. While school shootings are seemingly rare, there are a few incidents that have taken place in the past, including:
