Who Was Nitin Desai, The Art Director?

The acclaimed art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai was born on August 9, 1965, in Mulund, Mumbai. He passed away on August 2, 2023, at the age of 57.

A spectacular wedding was held last year for the daughter of producer Nitin Desai. Neha Desai, wife of art director Nitin Desai who died by suicide on August 2, has alleged that officials from Edelweiss had mentally harassed her husband in a bid to take over ND Studio at Karjat. 

Acclaimed art director Nitin Chandrakant Desai’s daughter Mansi had said in a statement that her father was going to make all the payments that he had promised.

In 2016, Desai, his wife Naina and their firm had availed a loan of Rs 150 crore from ECL Finance Ltd, and then in 2018, they took another Rs 31 crore.

Nitin Desai’s Career

He was known as a multi-talented art director, production designer, and film and television producer. His work as an assistant art director contributed to his successful career in the film industry.

Desai started out in the entertainment business, making TV shows before moving onto films. His ability as an artist was well known, and he received credit for his work in films like Lagaan, Devdas, and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Over the years, he earned the National Film Award for Best Art Direction four times and the Filmfare Best Art Direction Award three times.

In 2005, he opened his 52-acre ND Studios at Karjat, Navi Mumbai, which hosted blockbusters like Jodha Akbar, Traffic Signal, and Color’s reality show Big Boss.

Nitin Chandrakant Desai was born to Chandrakant Ganpat Desai and Meena Chandrakant Desai and shared his life’s journey with Naina Nitin Desai, who, like him, is a part of the film industry, working as a film producer.

Nitin Desai’s ND Art World Went Bankrupt

According to recent reports, his company, ND’s Art World Pvt. Ltd., was having financial issues, and a bankruptcy court had admitted an insolvency suit against it. 

In 2016 and 2018, the business borrowed a substantial sum from ECL Finance, totalling Rs 185 crore. However, things became worse in 2020 when they had trouble repaying a loan of Rs 252 crore. The matter is being looked into by the police as a possible suicide.

Along with providing services to the hotel, shopping centre, theme restaurant, and recreation centre industries, Nitin Desai’s company also dealt with maintaining and running reproductions of historical monuments.

Following a petition submitted by Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company, the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal started a corporate insolvency resolution process on July 25.
