Around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Tampa Police responded to a call for a child who had fallen into a swimming pool. Shaquil Barrett’s two-year-old daughter was taken to a nearby hospital but died.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, an investigation is ongoing. According to a statement released by TPD on Sunday, it is not believed to be suspicious at this time, but rather a purely accidental and tragic incident.
Who was Arrayah Barrett?
For those unversed, Barrett had four children, the youngest of whom was Arrayah. On February 2, 2012, the Tampa Bay linebacker, who has been with the team since 2019, married his wife, Jordanna.
Barrett and Jordanna, who met in high school, have three older children: Shaquil Jr., Braylon, and Aaliyah. Arrayah was born two months after Barrett and the Buccaneers won Super Bowl 55 over the Kansas City Chiefs. He’d just signed a four-year, $72 million contract with a guaranteed $34 million.
Barrett is in his fifth season with the Buccaneers. His 2022 season was cut short after he tore his Achilles in a Week 8 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
In eight games and starts, he finished the season with 31 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble. Barrett, who joined the Bucs as a free agent in 2019, led the NFL with 19.5 sacks and was named to his first Pro Bowl.
Arrayah was taken to a nearby hospital, but despite lifesaving measures, the 2-year-old was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Shaquil’s most recent Instagram post was on April 19, commemorating Arrayah’s second birthday.
In his recent post, he penned “Happy 2nd bday to my cutie girl. So sweet and cute,” Shaquil posted. “You made our family complete. I love you baby girl.”
