Arman Iqbal Khatri, an 18-year-old boy from Vile Parle, was named in the suicide note SIT had found inside the hostel room of the deceased student on March 26 and in the suicide note, Darshan blamed Khatri for driving him to his death.

Darshan Solanki jumped to his death from the IIT-Bombay hostel’s refuge area at around 1 p.m. on February 12, 2023. He was taken immediately, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigating the allegations of caste discrimination at IITB

Arman Khatri and Darshan Solanki were both students at IITB and shared a dorm room on the same floor. The Mumbai Police Commissioner has assigned the Special Investigation Team (SIT). This will be headed by Joint Commissioner (Crime Branch) Lakhmi Gautam, to look into the matter.

Darshan Solanki had joined IITB for a B-Tech course just three and a half months before the incident. His father, Rameshbhai Solanki, had alleged that Darshan had discussed the caste discrimination he was experiencing at the institute with his older sister and aunt.

Controversy over allegations of caste discrimination

After Darshan’s suicide, a section of left-leaning ideologues and supporters blamed caste discrimination as the reason for his decision to take the extreme step. They also accused higher caste Hindus of perpetuating discrimination leading to students taking extreme steps like suicide. However, an internal committee commissioned by the IITB found “no specific evidence of direct caste-based discrimination” resulting in the death of Darshan Solanki.

The panel alluded to his “deteriorating academic performance” as a possible reason for taking his life. The Maharashtra Home Department issued an order to transfer the investigation. From the local Powai police station to the Crime Branch. This is just prior to the beginning of the state’s Budget Session on Monday. The Crime Branch formed an SIT to probe this matter, which has now arrested the first suspect, Arman Iqbal Khatri, in this case.
