An awkward family event involving the Tsitsipas family occurred once again this week following a Stefanos match, threatening to eclipse the tennis news. On Friday night in Turin, the third-ranked player in the world, Andrey Rublev, was facing off against him in the ATP Finals.

After winning a faultless first set, Tsitsipas’ fortunes were looking up, but when the match went to a decider, he was unable to stop Rublev. He also lost control of his anger as his family’s constant sideline chitchat reached a breaking point. Tsitsipas was seen hitting a tennis ball in his team’s direction during a tumultuous third set, causing them to flee in fear.

Even though Tsitsipas later appeared to discount Rublev’s triumph by saying that his opponent’s game lacked “tools,” the Greek ultimately lost the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 as the Russian found and maintained a higher gear.

The incident was the most recent in a long-running tug-of-war between Tsitsipas and his team, which also includes his mother Julia, a former WTA professional, and father Apostolos, a longtime coach. The chair umpire chose not to acknowledge the incident, but it drew a few whistles from the audience.

Parents frequently play multiple roles in their children’s tennis careers, from providing emotional support to coaching. Tennis has a long history of legendary parents, whether it be Piotr Wozniacki for her daughter Caroline Wozniacki or Richard Williams for the Williams sisters. The fact that Stefanos Tsitsipas’ father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, also serves as his coach is therefore not a surprise.

Let’s have a look at who Apostolos Tsitsipas is and what role has he played in his son’s emerging tennis career.

Who Is Apostolos Tsitsipas? Father Of Stefanos Tsitsipas Who Is Also His Coach

Born on 24 December, 1967, Apostolos Tsitsipas is a tennis coach and father of World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas. The height of the 54 year old stands at 6 feet.

While Stefanos sets new records with each tournament, Apostolos is also solidifying his reputation as a tennis instructor. He is the father and coach of Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas who has played a significant role in his career.

Stefanos’ father had probably never thought himself working as a tennis coach. Growing up, Apostolos preferred basketball and football. He actually played for the Greek National Football Team! But tennis is really different from basketball and football. The length of a match can range from an hour to more than four hours, making it neither a team sport nor one with a set time limit. Therefore, how did Apostolos, who was accustomed to playing in a team environment, end up becoming a tennis coach? Well, it just happened.

Apostolos attended the University of Athens where he majored in Sports Science and chose tennis as his area of concentration for reasons he can still not explain.

It was strange because nobody from my background was involved in tennis. But I chose tennis, I don’t know why. Actually, that’s a good question,” he said to ATP Tour in an interview.

At the age of 23, Apostolos participated in the Greek championships, his first tennis competition of any type. His tennis instruction led him all around the world after that. In Vienna and Berlin, he completed three additional years of study in Tennis teaching. In those days, German tennis was proud of Boris Becker and Steffi Graf.

But he had to feed a four-person household. He quit his academic career to become an Athens country club teaching pro as a result. He was always a unique kind of trainer. He wanted the athlete to be fully developed, whereas others would only be concerned with wins and losses. He was really annoyed by the constant pressure from his parents and guardians for outcomes.

His father, who had prior coaching qualifications and expertise, took on the role of his coach. When his son was 12 years old, Apostolos began working with him as a coach full-time. To junior competitions around the world, he took his son with him. He still can be seen in the son’s coach box until today.

Stefanos has a net worth of $20 million.
