Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and its wider coalition, the National People’s Power (NPP), has been elected as Sri Lanka’s new President in the country’s first election since the economic crisis. Dissanayake garnered nearly 42% of the popular vote, significantly outpacing his closest competitor, Sajith Premadasa, who received just 23%. The sitting President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, finished in third place with only 16% of the vote.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake was born on November 24, 1968, in the village of Thambuthegama, located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, Anuradhapura District. His father worked as a laborer, and his mother was a homemaker; he also had one sister. Dissanayake pursued his early education at Thambuthegama Gamini Maha Vidyalaya and later at Thambuthegama Central College.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake: political journey and achievements
In 1995, Dissanayake became the National Organizer of the Socialist Students Association and joined the Central Working Committee of the JVP. By 1998, he had risen to the JVP’s Politburo. After the JVP re-entered mainstream politics under Somawansa Amarasinghe, the party initially supported Chandrika Kumaratunga during the 1994 parliamentary elections but soon became outspoken critics of her administration.
Dissanayake entered parliament in 2000 through the JVP’s National List and was re-elected in 2001. By winning 39 seats in 2004, Dissanayake was elected to parliament from the Kurunegala District and appointed Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation by President Kumaratunga in the SLFP-JVP coalition government. However, he resigned from his ministerial post on June 16, 2005, following the JVP’s decision to leave the coalition.
On August 18, 2019, the National People’s Power (NPP), a political organization led by the JVP, announced Dissanayake as their presidential candidate for the 2019 elections. He finished in third place, securing 3% of the valid votes, with a total of 418,553 votes. On August 29, 2023, the NPP declared that Dissanayake would once again run for president in the 2024 elections.
