Annie Leibovitz Brief Bio
Annie Leibovitz was born on October 2, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecticut and is currently aged at 73. Leibovitz’s father was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force while her mother was a dance instructor.
She took some of her first pictures when her father was stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. Leibovitz attended Northwood High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. It was here that she acquired an interest in various artistic endeavors and also began to write and play music.
Leibovitz later attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied painting, with the intention of becoming an art teacher. However, at school, she attended her first photography workshop, which made her change her major to photography. She was apparently inspired by the works of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Career History And Achievements
Annie initially began her career as a staff photographer for Rolling Stone magazine. She was eventually promoted as the chief photographer in 1973 and held the job for 10 years.
Interestingly, while working for the magazine, Leibovitz was the last person ever to professionally photograph John Lennon, before he was murdered five hours later.
Leibovitz later got a position with Vanity Fair magazine in 1983, after her new style of lighting and use of bold colors caught the attention of the famous magazine. Later in 1991, Leibovitz achieved the special distinction of becoming the second living portraitist and the first woman to mount an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.
The 73-year-old then began to work regularly for Vogue later in 1998. More recently, in 2015, Leibovitz was appointed the principal photographer for the 2016 Pirelli calendar. The calendar focuses on admirable women including Amy Schumer, Serena Williams, and Patti Smith.
Besides carrying out her full time job, she also teaches photography on the Masterclass website. leibovitz once famously said:
“Photography is actually a wonderful medium for a young person to just go out and discover themselves and discover the world around them. It gives them permission to go out and have a purpose and observe”.
Leibovitz had a close relationship with now deceased writer and essayist, Susan Sontag, dating back since 1989. She has three daughters, named Sarah, Susan, and Samuelle. Her net worth stands at $40 million.
