Anita Anand’s name has gained attention due to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s most recent cabinet reorganization.

Anita Anand and another Indo-Canadian have been appointed to key cabinet positions in Canada’s new administration. Two weeks after Carney’s Liberal Party won the elections, the announcement was made. Months before the elections, Carney took over as prime minister after Justin Trudeau announced his intention to resign.

Anita Anand, of Indian origin, has been appointed as Canada’s new foreign minister in a cabinet reshuffle led by Canadian PM Mark Carney.

57-year-old Anita Indira Anand who is a Hindu by religion was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia on 20 May,1967. Her father, S.V. (Andy) Anand, was a general surgeon, and her mother, Saroj D. Ram, was an anesthesiologist. Both of her parents are now deceased. Her mother was Punjabi, and her father was from Tamil Nadu.

For 21 years, Oakville East has been her home where her husband John and she have raised their four children alongside their two dogs.

In the 1960s, her parents immigrated to Canada, building a life in the picturesque town of Kentville, Nova Scotia and she was the middle child of three sisters, growing up alongside Gita and Sonia.

Gita Anand, Anita’s older sister, practices employment law in Toronto, while Sonia Anand, her younger sister, is a researcher and doctor at McMaster University.

In 1985, Anand moved to Ontario to study political studies for her bachelor’s degree at Queen’s University. She attended Wadham College in Oxford to study law after taking home the 1989 Political Studies gold prize. She returned to Nova Scotia after graduating from Oxford to attend Dalhousie University and earn her Canadian law degree before working as an attorney in Toronto.

Having graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Arts (honours) in political studies, Wadham College, Oxford University with a Bachelor of Arts (honours) in jurisprudence, Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Laws, and the University of Toronto with a Master of Laws, Anand has four degrees.

While working as an intern at a Toronto law office, Anita Anand got to know Canadian attorney and business magnate John Knowlton.

A small deed of compassion marked the beginning of their love journey. Anita and John began a lifelong relationship full of love and support in 1995 when they were married, solidifying their bond. In Oakville, Ontario, where Anand has served as a representative for her town in Parliament, they formed a fantastic team of parents and set out to raise their four children.

After relocating to Oakville, Anand and Knowlton established a conventional upper-middle-class lifestyle.

After incumbent John Oliver declared he will not run in the 2019 election, Anand made the decision to seek the Liberal nomination for the Oakville, Ontario, riding ahead of the federal election.

Canadian politician, scholar, and attorney Anita Indira Anand has held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. In Canadian history, she is the first visible minority to occupy the position.

She oversaw Canada’s procurement of vaccines and personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as Receiver General of Canada and Minister of Public Services and Procurement from 2019 to 2021.

She served as Minister of National Defence from 2021 to 2023, and during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, she was instrumental in Canada’s attempts to support Ukraine militarily. She was the Treasury Board President from 2023 to 2024 and the Transport and Internal Trade Minister from 2024 to 2025.

Anand was a professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law before entering politics, where she focused on capital market regulation and corporate governance.
