Arsenal have reportedly secured Andrea Berta as their new sporting director, replacing Edu Gaspar, who resigned last year in November. Arsenal’s managing director Richard Garlick, alongside executive vice-chair Tim Lewis, and manager Mikel Arteta, all approved the appointment of Berta. The news of the new appointment came ahead of Arsenal’s 1-1 Premier League match draw against Manchester United.
The Italian has seemingly spent 12 years at Atletico Madrid and will undoubtedly bring extensive experience to the Etihad. Moreover, his arrival also comes as Arsenal makes preparations for crucial transfer decisions ahead of the new season.

Following the news about the new appointment, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made a statement saying:
The club is doing the process that we believe is the best to try to find the person that is the best one for the moment that Arsenal is in right now.”
Arteta also praised Berta’s proven track record in building competitive squads besides welcoming his arrival.

Berta studied sports management and football administration in Italy before starting out his professional career.
Career
Beginning his career in 2002, Berta was hired as sporting director of AC Carpenedolo, an amateur and semi-professional team and Berta moved to Parma Calcio 1913 in 2007 to be in the same sporting director capacity.
Under Berta’s direction, Parma returned to Serie A in the first season following their relegation, proving his remarkable rebuilding skills and attracting greater interest from other teams.
Andrea Berta started out his career in football administration at AC Carpenedolo before joining Parma in 2007. He got his first major role with Genoa back in 2009, where he played a key role in the signings of Hernan Crespo and Rodrigo Palacio. Berta eventually moved to join Atletico Madrid in 2013 as their technical director, eventually becoming their sporting director in 2017.
During his time at the club, Atletico won two La Liga titles (2013-14, 2020-21) and a Europa League (2017-18) title. The club also finished twice as Champions League runners-up during that era. While working at Atletico, Berta gained a reputation for his player recruitment skills. His major standout signings include Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak, and Rodri, as well as big-money moves for Joao Felix, Julian Alvarez, and Thomas Lemar.
He generated €90 million for the club when he sold Griezmann to Barcelona for €120 million and masterminded the purchase of Rodri from Villarreal for a meagre €20 million and obtained a net income of €50 million for the club upon his sale to Manchester City for €70 million.
