America Yamilet Sanchez was a Mexican Navy cadet who recently passed away after the boat that she was on, crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge. The CuauhtĂ©moc, which was carrying 277 personnel, struck the Brooklyn Bridge after reportedly losing power owing to a mechanical failure. The impact seemingly damaged the ship’s masts, which led to chaos onboard the ship.

Sanchez was reportedly positioned on one of the masts at the time of the accident and  died instantly. Just hours before the tragedy, she had just posted a joyful photo from New York on social media. Following the accident, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and New York City Mayor Eric Adams both came out and officially confirmed the crash and the casualties.

According to official reports, the incident left twenty-two individuals injured, with 11 in critical condition. The Mexican Navy has since launched an official investigation into the cause of the power failure. A viral footage of the accident is currently circulating on social media, which shows the ship’s towering masts crashing into the base of the bridge. The ship trails the Mexican flag while stunned onlookers recorded the whole moment.

America Yamilet Sanchez was a Mexican navy cadet who was born in Xalapa, Veracruz. She was just 20 years old at the time of her death, and she was a proud cadet of the Mexican Navy. Sanchez was reportedly serving onboard the Cuauhtémoc as part of her naval training when she tragically passed away. Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García confirmed her identity, while also expressing condolences to her family.

Sanchez was on board the Cuauhtémoc as part of a practical deployment during an international goodwill mission. According to reports, only the most promising cadets can avail such opportunities.

Adal Jair Marcos also killed in the crash

Aside from America Yamilet Sanchez, another victim was killed in the crash, identified as Adal Jair Marcos. Marcos was a 22-year-old cadet from Oaxaca, Mexico, and he was part of the same training group aboard the Cuauhtémoc.
