After the incident, in which Toth rubbed away a mark on the court after a controversial point, both tennis enthusiasts and the tennis community have harshly criticised Toth. After Zhang’s sad retirement from the match and the Hungarian cheered.
Meanwhile, Tod apologised via a video posted by the Hungarian Grand Prix’s Instagram page:
I’m extremely sorry for what happened.
I respect Zhang Shuai as a person and just as much as an athlete. It was never my intention to disrespect, to upset or hurt anybody, let alone Zhang Shuai.”
Zhang struck a crosscourt forehand that appeared to land on the line in the first set, but both a line judge and an umpire ruled the ball out. Even though the game went on, Zhang kept asking for the decision to be changed and questioned it anyway.
The video then shows Toth approaching the spot on the court and rubbing it away with her foot. “Why did you do that?” was heard from a visibly upset Zhang to which Tod replies: You’re making problems.
Later, with the score 6-5, a sad Zhang decided to give up the game, which led Toth to rejoice.

The 20-year-old young woman made her WTA debut in 2021, finishing the year at position 1,006 barely outside the top 1000. She made her first significant appearance on a major stage that year when she and partner Maria Bondarenko advanced to the girls’ doubles French Open final.
