Alain Bernard Bongo (Ali Bongo Ondimba) is a renowned Gabonese politician and businessman who was born on February 9, 1959.
He completed his higher education at Pantheon-Sorbonne University, Paris, France (1977–1981).

His father was Omar Bongo, who was a former president of Gabon and politician, and his mother, Patience Dabany, was a former First Lady of Gabon.
He was born in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, with three siblings: Pascaline Bongo Ondimba, Albertine Amissa Bongo, and Frederic Bongo Ondimba.
Political strongman Omar Bongo converted to Islam in 1973 and changed his name from Albert-Bernard Bongo to its current form and following Omar Bongo’s death, his son Ali Bongo Ondimba, also a Muslim, ascended to the presidency.

Ali Bongo’s Married Life
Ali Bongo was married twice. In 1989, he married a French nationalist, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba. The couple together have four children: Malika Bongo Ondimba Valentin, Jalil Bongo Ondimba, and Bilal Bongo.
He later remarried in 1994 to an American from Los Angeles, Inge Lynn Collins Bongo, who later divorced him in 2015.
Ali Bongo’s Career
He served as minister of foreign affairs from 1989 to 1991, when his father was president. From 1991 to 1999, he served as a deputy for Bongoville in the National Assembly before being appointed defence minister from 1999 to 2009.
Ali Bongo was elected president of Gabon in 2009, using the GDP’s nomination, following the passing of his father.
In a general election plagued by numerous anomalies, arrests, breaches of human rights, and post-election protests and violence, he was re-elected in 2016.
As per military officials, on August 30, 2023, Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba was placed under house arrest while one of his sons was being held on “treason” charges. Shortly after the military officials said that they had successfully overthrown the Gabonese government, this development occurred.
