For the curious, Karmanov, sometimes spelled Carmanov, as aforesaid, is no less than 6-foot-11, 250 pounds! Eligible for the 2026 NHL draft, he could make history as the first Moldovan to be drafted in the NHL.
If he were in the NCAA now, he would be the tallest player, standing 3 inches taller than 6-foot-8 Jack Sparkes at Clarkson.
Calling the Nittany Lions’ decision to take on Karmanov a project might be an unfair assessment of his skills, though there is a lot of unknown about his current talent and potential.
Previous Season
Karmanov hails from Chisinau, the capital and largest city of Moldova. Last season, he played in Russia with Vityaz Podolsk’s Under-16 team and Pinskiye Yastreby in the Belarusian Under-18 league, scoring nine points in 25 games.
Moldova, a small Eastern European country sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, isn’t exactly a hockey den. However, Karmanov has played against top competition in Russia and Belarus.
He secured two goals and nine points through 25 games between the two clubs. While skating ability is often a concern for players of Karmanov’s stature, however, the limited footage suggests he is pretty good on his feet.
His move to North America will be facilitated by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights of the United States Premier Hockey League, where he is expected to suit up for their U-16 AAA squad.
This program Isn’t a surprising landing spot for Karmanov, as the club has a history of developing numerous Russian talent, including Ivan Provorov, Dmitriy Zaitsev, Denis Smirnov, and Nikita Pavlychev.
Previously, Alexander Karmanov, was invited to compete at the 16U World Selects Invitational, this year. His height makes him easy to spot on the ice at any given moment.
