MetroHealth where Akram Boutros worked operates 4 hospitals, four emergency departments, and more than 20 health centers all across Cuyahoga County in Cleveland, Ohio. Their system serves more than 300,000 patients, two-thirds of whom are uninsured or covered by Medicare or Medicaid.

Akram Boutros Professional Career, Family, Education

Akram Boutros was known for being the president and chief executive of MetroHealth since June 2011. He belongs to Egyptian parents, Boutros and his family shifted to New York City when he was just 12 years old as per Cleveland Magazine. Akram had dreamt of becoming a doctor in his life and as a child but couldn’t speak English when he arrived in the US.

Later on, Akram achieved his goal with his hard work. Boutros attended the St John’s University, SUNY Downstate Medical Center as well as Harvard Business School’s Management Program. Later on, Akram received an honorary Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Northeast Ohio Medical. From the University of Baldwin Wallace, he got an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

His wife is Suzanne Aral-Boutros, a successful insurance agent on Long Island. Boutros said his annual bonuses from 2018 to 2021 ranged from $300,000 to $450,000 and said his base salaries during that time ranged from $900,000 to $1.13 million with him raking in a bonus of $1.9 million in four years.

Why Was Akram Boutros Fired?

In a statement which has been released by the healthcare company on Monday on 21st of November, chairperson Vanessa Whiting stated, ‘the decision had been made over claims Boutros granted himself approximately $1 billion of financial bonuses without knowledge of board members.”

She said: “Dr Boutros established specific metrics by his own admission and he also conducted self-assessments of his performance with these all metrics. He made the authorized payment to himself which was close to $1,900,000 in terms of supplemental bonuses. These were based on self-evaluations that were carried out between 2018 and 2022.”

Boutros denied that all the bonuses were unauthorized and he stated,’ they were all proper and the board was aware of the payments made.’
