The University of Albany revealed on Wednesday that AJ Simon, a former defensive lineman and potential 2024 NFL draft pick, passed away at a very young age.

The college statement described him as a “better teammate”. It read:

He was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany.”

He was regarded as “a pillar to this programme over the last two years” and “a role model” not just profesionally but also off pitch.

The cause of death for the late NFL player who died at 25, just ahead of the NFL Draft, was not announced. The Albany head coach Greg Gattuso stated on his X account:

Two joyous year coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon. My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”

A look at AJ Simon’s career

Before moving to Albany ahead to the 2022 season, AJ Simon started his collegiate career in 2018 at Bloomsburg University. Simon made 24 appearances for the Great Danes in the previous two seasons. 31 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks were accrued by him in his college career.

He was named to the CAA first team based on his 12.5 sacks and 55 tackles from the previous campaign. ESPN projected the defensive lineman to go as high as the 448th pick in next week’s NFL draft. In 2023, he recorded 21.5 tackles for loss with 12.5 sacks, earning him a spot on the All-CAA first-team defence.

Last season, the Great Danes captured the CAA conference championship for the first time. It was their first conference title since they took home the FCS Northeast Conference title in 2012. They went to the FCS semifinal, but South Dakota State, the top-ranked team, defeated them.

Simon spent two seasons as a performer at Albany. Before coming to Albany, he played sports as a student-athlete at Bloomsburg University.
