According to reports, a helicopter crash on Thursday claimed the lives of six persons, including Agustin Escobar, a senior Spanish executive at Siemens.

A Spanish family of two adults and three children and the helicopter’s pilot were identified by authorities as the victims who were Siemens executive Agustin Escobar, his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal, a global manager at an energy technology company, and their three children including the pilot.

Divers retrieved four bodies from the river, two of whom were alive and rushed to hospitals before dying from their injuries.

When their helicopter fell into the Hudson River, Spain Siemens CEO Agustin Escobar, his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three children, ages four, five, and eleven, are also said to have perished. According to reports, the family from Barcelona was in New York City for a sightseeing excursion.

The identity of the 36 year old pilot, who also perished in the collision, is still unknown. Around 3:15 p.m., the New York City Fire Department was called to report that a Bell 306 helicopter had crashed into the Manhattan River. Mayor Eric Adams verified the deaths of all six passengers a few hours later.

The Bell 206 chopper, operated by New York Helicopter Tours, departed at about 3 p.m. ET (1900 GMT) from a downtown helicopter pad and flew north over the Hudson River.

It turned south when it reached the George Washington Bridge and crashed minutes later, hitting the water upside down and sinking near Lower Manhattan about 3:15 p.m., just off Hoboken, New Jersey. New York Helicopter Tour CEO Michael Roth revealed the pilot of the aircraft had radioed about needing more fuel minutes before the tourist chopper crashed.

The head of Siemen’s Spanish division was Agustin Escobar.

Agustin Escobar, CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, his wife, age 40 Mercè Camprubí Montal, global commercialization manager at Siemens Energy, and their children Agustín, 10, Mercè, 8 and Víctor, 4, were all killed.

Agustin Escobar, 53, was well known in the global engineering and tech industries and had 25 years of experience.

Agustin was the CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility since October 2024. Before that, he was was the President and CEO of Siemens Spain from December 2022 and was also the CEO of Siemens Mobility Southwest Europe for four years between December 2019 and October 2024. While his salary and net worth aren’t known, Siemens (SIEGn.DE) Chief Executive Roland Busch’s compensation package rose 26% to 8.61 million euros ($9.04 million) for the 2024 financial year.

He attended Universidad Pontificia Comillas to study Electrical Industrial Engineering. He earned an MBA from Universidad de Alcala in 2002. According to his LinkedIn profile, he also completed an Executive MBA in Business Administration at IE Business School in 2005.

He was married to Merce Camprubi Montal, a global manager at an energy technology company, and the couple had three kids together with the entire family passing away in the crash.

She was the granddaughter of former FC Barcelona President Agustí Montal i Costa (1969–1977) and great-granddaughter of former FC Barcelona President Agustí Montal i Galobart (1946–1952) and her brother, Joan Camprubí Montal, leads the ‘Som un clam’ platform.

Agustin Escobar career

For over 27 years, Agustin Escobar was employed at Siemens. In 1998, he began working for the company as the Head of Project Management and Sales for Power Automation Systems in Spain. He headed many business divisions and assumed larger responsibilities throughout the years, earning numerous Siemens Country Awards in the process. Additionally, he worked on infrastructure initiatives for electric vehicles throughout Southwest Europe.

He relocated to New York City in 2010 to manage North American international business growth. He then worked in Bogota, Colombia, where he oversaw three factories and more than 1,300 workers. His division was recognized as Siemens’ top-performing company globally in 2016.

In 2018, Mr. Escobar returned to Spain to take the helm of Siemens Rail Automation SAU and Siemens Mobility SLU, where he oversaw large rail projects involving more than 1,000 workers. He also served as the CEO of Siemens Mobility for the Southwest Europe Region from 2019 to 2024, which included more than 3,000 employees and covered Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, and portions of Africa.
