Annette Addo-Yobo made history over the weekend by becoming the first immigrant-born and first Ghanaian to win the title of Miss Texas.

Born in Ghana and raised in Canada and the U.S., Addo-Yobo graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She has a younger brother named Andrew.

Shouldering the difficulties of caring for an ailing mother and a brother with special needs, Addo-Yobo persevered to earn her bachelor’s degree at UTD and master’s at Sam Houston State University.

Born in the West African nation of Ghana, and now a U.S. citizen who grew up in the United States and Canada, she is a clinical research coordinator at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas where she manages a clinical trial study in the medical school’s outpatient psychiatry department.

With her father working in the cybersecurity field, Addo-Yobo served as her mother’s caretaker while attending college with her mom passing away at the age of 51.

In an Instagram post, Addo-Yobo expressed that she is “humbled, honored, and grateful” to be the 87th Miss Texas, and hopes to “continue making history with the Texas community and the Miss Texas class.”

This year, Addo-Yobo competed as Miss Southlake, having previously held the title of Miss Dallas in 2023.

Her spoken word performance during the pageant’s talent contest highlighted her commitment to promoting autism awareness, a cause dear to her since childhood.

Winning the pageant has further motivated Addo-Yobo to use her platform, The SPARK Project, which addresses the structural inequities she has seen her brother Andrew face in various spaces.

Her Miss Southlake social media account highlights some of her previous work, including bringing autism awareness to Capitol Hill in March as the only volunteer advocate for Autism Speaks.
