Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 1999 and whose case got national attention after the “Serial” podcast cast doubt on his guilt, has had his murder conviction upheld by a Maryland appeals court.

A circuit court judge overturned Syed’s conviction and granted his release last year after finding flaws in the prosecution’s case. However, in a 2-1 decision, the Maryland appellate court panel ordered a new hearing into the matter, saying the lower court had violated the victim’s family’s right to attend a critical hearing in the case.

Although the panel did not directly send Syed back to jail, it did allow for a two-month delay in the “mandate” of its ruling so that the parties would have time to consider how to proceed. Moreover, Adnan Syed continues to insist that he is innocent.

Why was he in jail?

Adnan Syed was leading a regular life until his 18-year-old classmate and lover, Hae Min Lee, vanished one day after school in 1999. When the authorities found Hae Min Lee’s corpse on February 6, suspicion fell upon him.

Eventually, he was arrested on February 28 for the murder of Lee after a friend of his subsequently admitted to taking part in the body’s burial.

The first trial he had that year resulted in a mistrial. So, he tried once again in 2000 and was found guilty by a jury of killing Lee, whose body was discovered buried in a park in Baltimore.

Adnan Syed received a life sentence of +30 years in jail from the court. However, as a result of fresh evidence given in the form of Sarah Koenig’s podcast “Serial,” Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Martin Welch overturned Adnan’s conviction in 2016. In September 2022, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn released him from prison after 22 years.
