Find out more about his background, case, and much more.
Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 1999 and whose case got national attention after the “Serial” podcast cast doubt on his guilt, has had his murder conviction upheld by a Maryland appeals court.
A circuit court judge overturned Syed’s conviction and granted his release last year after finding flaws in the prosecution’s case. However, in a 2-1 decision, the Maryland appellate court panel ordered a new hearing into the matter, saying the lower court had violated the victim’s family’s right to attend a critical hearing in the case.

Maryland Court of Appeals reinstates Adnan Syed’s murder conviction

They reinstated Adnan Syed’s conviction because the victim’s brother couldn’t be at the hearing. This justice system is ridiculous.

I saw that Adnan Syed's conviction was re-instated on a technicality today, and of course there are opinions.
But I wanted to point out something that it seems a lot of people missed. The state's attorney in Baltimore essentially said new DNA testing ruled Adnan out as a suspect pic.twitter.com/xDakoFDPTU

Although the panel did not directly send Syed back to jail, it did allow for a two-month delay in the “mandate” of its ruling so that the parties would have time to consider how to proceed. Moreover, Adnan Syed continues to insist that he is innocent.
Due to this recent development, he has again become a trending topic of discussion, with many people now trying to find out more about him and his case. So, here’s what we know about him:
Who is Adnan Syed?
Adnan Syed is a notorious American Muslim. He has been in the news because his murder conviction was recently upheld by a Maryland appeals court.
In 1999, he attended Woodlawn High School. While in prison, he married a woman named Kandra, who is the daughter of another prisoner, as per Islamic rituals. However, they later got divorced. He is currently 42 years old.
Why was he in jail?
Adnan Syed was leading a regular life until his 18-year-old classmate and lover, Hae Min Lee, vanished one day after school in 1999. When the authorities found Hae Min Lee’s corpse on February 6, suspicion fell upon him.
Eventually, he was arrested on February 28 for the murder of Lee after a friend of his subsequently admitted to taking part in the body’s burial.
The first trial he had that year resulted in a mistrial. So, he tried once again in 2000 and was found guilty by a jury of killing Lee, whose body was discovered buried in a park in Baltimore.
Adnan Syed received a life sentence of +30 years in jail from the court. However, as a result of fresh evidence given in the form of Sarah Koenig’s podcast “Serial,” Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Martin Welch overturned Adnan’s conviction in 2016. In September 2022, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn released him from prison after 22 years.
Nevertheless, he had to wear a GPS tracking device. A 30-day window was provided for state prosecutors to submit a retrial petition. He has consistently maintained his innocence.
