Washington Commanders hire Adam Peters as new head of football operations
The Washington Commanders appointed former 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters as their new head of football operations on Friday. CBS Sports Lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones confirmed the decision just days after Washington previously narrowed down its search to Peters and Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham.
Adam Peters career
Following a successful player career, Adam Peters spent eight years with the Broncos. He first worked as a scout before taking up a new role as the director of college scouting. Peters then began his NFL career as a Patriots scout from 2003–2008, during which New England won two Super Bowls. He later joined the 49ers and spent his last three seasons as an assistant to 49ers GM John Lynch. Prior to his role as assistant GM, Peters worked as the team’s vice president of player personnel from 2017–2020. While working there, the 49ers advanced to three different NFC championships, including one Super Bowl.
Notably, the Commanders still have Martin Mayhew, another former 49ers executive, as their current GM. As such, Peters will most probably work under him, or the team could reassign Mayhew’s role or even replace him.
Commanders on the lookout for a new head coach
The Commanders recently sacked Ron Rivera as their head coach, and Peters’ arrival could help in their search for a new replacement. Adam Peters has an extensive amount of title-winning experience, which could prove beneficial for new owner Joshua Harris. Moreover, his appointment could also attract other big names to join the team. Just recently, Washington requested to interview Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, who previously spent six years under Kyle Shanahan with the 49ers.
