P. K. Rosy’s family and education
P. K. Rosy acted in Vigathakumaran which was directed by J. C. Daniel. P.K. and was born as Rajamma in 1903 in Nandankode Trivandrum to Pulaya family. P.K. Rosy’s living relatives confirmed that her father died when she was quite young and her family was living in poverty.
Her younger years were spent as a grass-cutter. Rosy was also interested in arts and was encouraged by her uncle, who made her attend classes for music and acting as well. She went to a local school of performing arts to study Kakkarissi Nattakam.
Kakkarissi Nattakam is a form of Tamil folk theatre in a mix of Tamil and Malayalam revolving around stories of Siva and Parvati arriving on Earth as nomads. During that time, acting was basically not women’s work, and women who considered acting as serious were labeled licentious or “loose”.
Rosy was married to Kesava Pillai and together they had 2 kids namely Padma and Nagappan.
Rosy is considered Malayalam cinema’s first heroine who broke barriers with her role in the film Vigathakumaran, her first movie. Rosy’s real name was Rajamma.
Some accounts even say that her hut was burnt down by the upper caste groups and she is said to have married a truck driver named Kesava Pillai and left to Tamil Nadu. She was a Dalit Hindu.

By early 1928, Kakkarissi Nattakam had become skilled in Kakkirasi. From this, Rosy stepped in to become an actress in JC Daniel’s movie after his first shortlisted actress was a misfit for the role. She played Sarojini who was a Nair woman. When Vigathukumaran was released, members of the Nair community were enraged to see a Dalit woman portray a Nair.
Numerous eminent members of the movie industry at that time refused to come and inaugurate the opening of Vigathakumaran if Rosy was physically present there, including famous lawyer Madhoor Govindan Pillai.
The director, Daniel, himself did not invite her to the opening at the Capitol Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram, fearing a backlash. But Rosy attended the second show of her movie.
