Abhijit Iyer-Mitra is currently under fire and facing intense backlash for posting s*xist slurs on social media. He made a series of posts on X between February and May 2025, which portrayed derogatory remarks against Newslaundry Executive Editor Manisha Pande alongside eight other women journalists.
Following the intense backlash online and petitions from various groups, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday warned Abhijit Iyer-Mitra to take down the allegedly defamatory posts. The court stated that it would order an FIR against him if he failed to comply. Abhijit received five hours to comply to the order, to which he seemingly agreed to take down. The court termed his posts as “not permissible in any civilised society”.

He has lived a public life that largely revolves around national security, policy commentary, and social issues. Abhijit is openly gay and he is one of the petitioners seeking legal recognition of same-s*x marriage in India.

His mother was IAS officer 1971 batch of the Tamil Nadu cadre. She took voluntary retirement in1991 and from then on was the President Janata Party and Dr.Swamy’s associate from 1991. Chandralekha is also known for her time as General Manager of the Civil Supplies Corporation and Deputy Secretary of Food but details about Abhijit’s father aren’t known.

Education
Abhijit Iyer-Mitra holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Madras. After completing his undergraduate studies, he pursued a master’s in international relations at Monash University in Australia. He worked as a research assistant on projects related to Muslim minorities and Islamic policy studies between 2007 and 2010.
Professional career
Abhijit Iyer-Mitra has notably held various research positions, including at the Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, as well as at the Stimson Center in Washington, D.C. Back in India, Abhijit has worked with the Observer Research Foundation and he is a senior fellow at IPCS. He specializes in defense economics, nuclear policy, and procurement.
Past controversies
Over the years, Abhijit Iyer-Mitra has landed himself in the centre of several controversies. He previously served 43 days in Odisha’s Jharpada prison after posting a video mocking religious sensibilities at the Konark Sun Temple. He once sued a journalist and an NDTV anchor over a ‘like’ on a tweet that alleged rape accusations.
Back in 2022, Twitter suspended his account following his remarks about a Supreme Court order. Iyer-Mitra then took Twitter to Delhi High Court, following which he got his account reinstated and then withdrew the case. Abhijit also drew criticism after meeting U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna back in 2023, as Muslim advocacy groups condemned the meeting. They labelled Iyer-Mitra an “Islamophobe” for his past statements about Muslim politicians.
