A number of people in Kerala have raised INR 35 crore through a crowd-funding campaign to help Abdul Rahim

Abdul Rahim is a man from Kozhikode and he was convicted in Saudi Arabia for the death of a 15-year-old disabled boy. Now people from Kerala have raised raised INR 35.45 crore to set him free. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan praised this initiative. According to Vijayan, for those spreading hate propaganda and targeting their state with falsehoods, the people of Kerala are countering with tales of compassion and generosity.

According to media reports, Abdul Rahim worked as a personal driver for a Saudi individual and also cared for a 15-year-old disabled boy. Rahim claims that one day, while driving with the boy, they stopped at a red light.

The boy asked Rahim to drive through the red signal and Rahim accidentally hit the tube which was serving as the life-support device for the 15-year-old boy. Following the disconnection between his tube and life support device, he lost consciousness and ultimately died.

Rahim can be pardoned if he pays Rs 34 crore as ‘blood money’. The money that is collected in India will be sent to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh via the Ministry of External Affairs for Rahim’s release. Rahim has thanked everyone involved in gathering money for his release. The goal for his release is met and no further donations will be accepted now.

Crowd-funding campaign

People from Kerala have gathered funds for the release of Abdul Rahim through various means including crowdfunding campaigns, donations, and support from the community. A committee of legal experts was established to coordinate the crowdfunding efforts to support Abdur Rahim. They developed a smartphone application called ‘SAVEABDULRAHIM’ to gather donations. Over ₹30 crore were raised through this app.

The fundraising goal was met by combining the online donations with the funds received through offline channels. A campaign on social media platforms was also initiated to assist in securing Rahim’s release.

The committee revealed its intention to reach out to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh to aid in securing Rahim’s release before the deadline of April 15th.
