Abdalmasih H brief bio
According to some French media reports, the suspect from the France playground attack has been identified as Abdalmasih H, who had been living in Sweden since 2013. Abdalmasih is married to a Swedish woman, and even has a three-year-old daughter together.
Abdalmasih is reportedly a Christian Syrian who was born in the north-eastern city of Al Hasakah. The area is known to have a large Christian community. However, following the civil war in Syria, he left the country back in 2011.
Following the incident, a woman from Sweden has come forward claiming to be his estranged wife. According to the woman, she first met him in Turkey about five years ago. The pair eventually settled together in Trollhättan in Sweden, a city located near Gothenburg.
However, according to the wife, the couple separated around eight months ago. She added that she had not heard anything from him for four months since. She went on to describe the suspect as a “nice” man who looked after their daughter well.
According to a Swedish media outlet, the suspect was previously fined for benefits offences. Abdalmasih simultaneously claimed both a student grant as well as an unemployment support. A court report dated in 2022 on the fine notes that he lived “under orderly conditions”. Aside from that Abdalmasih reportedly also made several unsuccessful applications for a Swedish citizenship.
Abdalmasih H stated as suspect in France playground attack
According to media reports, the suspect was carrying a cross and a Christian prayer book when police arrested him. Since he was a legal refugee in Sweden, he was allowed to move freely around other EU states around the passport-free Schengen zone. All he had to do was carry around his asylum papers with him.
The court granted the suspect’s asylum request back in April 2023, and interestingly, he had already submitted another separate asylum bid in France in November 2022.
However, according to French newspaper Libération:
“His request in France was therefore pointless. He was legal from the point of view of EU law,”
According to the same source, the playground stabbing attack was an “isolated attack,” and not launched by a terrorist cell. Neither the French nor the EU security services flagged Abdilmasih as a threat.
Syrian Civil war
Abdilmasih is a Syrian Civil war refugee and among a million Syrian refugees who fled to Europe since 2011. The brutal civil war between Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian dictator, and rebel forces forced many Syrian citizens to evacuate. Christians citizens in particular were also heavily persecuted by the so-called Islamic State group. The group controlled large areas of Syrian territory at the height of its power between 2013 and 2019.
Most of Europe’s Syrian refugees live in Germany, with around 60 per cent of them taking shelter in the country. Meanwhile, Sweden, hosts around 11 per cent of the refugees. According to reports, the Syrian civil war caused an estimated 400-600,000 deaths. Following the deadly war, Assad still remains in power and has regained control over many territories which he initially lost around the time the conflict began in 2011.
While Western sanctions continue functioning, the Arab world is currently rebuilding its ties with Syria. Saudi Arabia recently hosted Assad in May and there are already talks of Syrian refugees in based in neighbouring Arab countries to be returned to Syria.
The main behind developing relations with Assad is due to economic interests and his continued dominance over the country. Reports state that the war has displaced an estimated five million Syrian refugees to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. Meanwhile, a further six million are displaced within teh country itself.
