The Baltimore police were alerted to the situation around 12.35 am on Sunday, July 2nd, responding to numerous calls concerning a shooting in the 800 Block of Gretna Avenue.

The night of the incident that took life of young Aaliyah Gonzales
When police arrived, they found a scary scene: a woman had been shot to death and several other people had been shot. Official reports say that young Aaliyah Gonzales died at the scene, and that 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.
The fallout of the shooting was just as terrible: 28 people between the ages of 13 and 32 were seriously hurt. Nine of these injured people were taken to local hospitals right away, while the others went to get help on their own. Also cting Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at a news conference on Sunday afternoon that it was shocking that 15 of the people hurt were children.

Little is known about 18 year old Aaliyah Gonzales, however, an emotional social media post by her mother, Krystal, paints a heartbreaking picture. The post discloses that Aaliyah had just graduated from high school.
Stricken with grief, Krystal shared numerous photos of her daughter’s graduation celebration, encapsulating her sorrow with a heart-wrenching caption, “MY BABY!!! Worst day of my life! I cannot do life without her, I NEED HER!!”. This touching tribute saw hundreds of sympathizers sharing their condolences.
Ongoing investigation
The investigation into the tragedy continued for hours, with police officers cordoning off the area amid clusters of two-story apartment buildings. Commissioner Worley has stated that at least two suspects are believed to have been involved in the mass shooting, but it is possible there may have been more. Authorities are currently uncertain as to whether the crowd was specifically targeted or the assailants were shooting randomly.
Community condemns the violence
As the community grapples with this harrowing incident, several witnesses have recounted the terrifying moments of the block party. One witness recollected the confusion as the sound of fireworks was mistaken for gunshots.
Mayor Brandon Scott strongly condemned the shooting, labeling it as a “reckless, cowardly act” and vowing to find those responsible. The hunt for justice is on, but the wound inflicted on the community will take time to heal.
