On Saturday, Indian long-distance runner Kartik Kumar bagged a silver while his fellow countryman, Gulveer Singh earned a bronze in the 10,000-metre race. Throughout the race, Kumar was at the top of his game and managed to keep gold medalist Birhanu Balew quite close.
Kumar finished the race close behind him, recording 28:15:38, while the Ethiopian descent, Birhanu Balew finished at 28:13:62. Gulveer Singh finished with a time of 28:17:21.
Kartik’s ability to compete with Balew until the very end of the race seemed to mesh well with his voracious running style. However, Balew appeared to be too powerful and eventually succeeded in pipping him.
The nation may nevertheless rejoice with ease, as he and Gulveer made sure that two medals would be added to the already impressive total.
Who Is Kartik Kumar?
Kartik, a 1999-born athlete, has twice had the honour of taking home medals from a national competition. Kartik is a havaldar in the Indian Army and a member of the Jat regiment. He comes from the village of Shimlana in the Saharanpur region of western Uttar Pradesh.
Kartik Kumar’s Motivation
He earlier stated that he began jogging at the age of 14 after being motivated by a local neighbour who was getting ready to enlist in the Army.
He said, “A lot of boys run in our area because they are getting ready for the Army physical (exam). Many young people were motivated to pursue athletics by one high jumper who competed in the nationals, but the ultimate objective is to join the Army.”
Kartik Kumar’s Athletic Career
Kartik Kumar won the gold at the Federation Cup in 2022, which had a significant impact on how he developed as a runner. Kartik’s bronze medal from the 2018 Junior Asian Championship is yet another achievement. The runner is currently undergoing training with the Pune-based army’s long-distance running programme.
He has frequently acknowledged the help of veteran runner Avinash Sable and coach Amrish from the Army Sports Institute in Pune for his development as a runner.
