On Saturday, members of the public found Brianna Ghey wounded on a path in Linear Park, Culcheth, at around 3:13 pm, know about the suspects held in her case

Two 15-year-olds were arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing Brianna Ghey in the park. A boy and a girl from the local area have been taken into custody, and the police are pursuing several lines of inquiry but their names and personal information hasn’t been revealed. Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans has appealed to anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.

The victim, Brianna Ghey, was a 16-year-old transgender girl from Birchwood in Warrington, Cheshire. Her death has caused shock and devastation in the local community. Emma Mills, headteacher at Brianna’s school Birchwood Community High School, expressed her condolences and promised to support the school community during this difficult time.

In recent years, hate crimes against transgender people have been on the rise just like Brianna Ghey. In 2020, 350 hate crimes against transgender people were reported to the police in England and Wales, a 16% increase from the previous year. However, the police have stated that there is no evidence to suggest that Brianna’s murder was a hate crime.
The local police have increased their patrols in the area and have assured residents that they will address any concerns they may have. Also they have asked anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward and assist in the investigation. The police have also asked local businesses and residents to check any CCTV or dashcam footage for anything that may aid their investigation in Brianna Ghey case.
Police on a lookout for possible leads
Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans said that the police are looking into several possible leads and asked that anyone with information come forward. He said, “A number of inquiries in relation to this incident are under way and we are doing all that we can to establish the exact circumstances of what has happened.”

The tragic death of Brianna Ghey has once again highlighted the need for society to do more to protect transgender people from hate crimes. Also the Equality and Human Rights Commission has called on the government to take urgent action to improve the safety and support of transgender people. They have recommended that the government introduce a new hate crime offence that specifically targets hostility towards transgender people.
