Dereck Jerome Lively II is an American professional basketball player who was born on February 12, 2004 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He currently plays for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association as a center. Duke was a consensus five-star recruit and among the top players in the 2022 class.

Dereck Lively II’s father, Dereck Lively, worked as a chef but struggled with drug addiction for many years. As a result, he passed away from cocaine and heroin overdose in 2012, when Dereck was just seven years old. During an interview with sports reporter, Dereck shared how he wishes to create a different path and change the family name by bringing in success. The young starlet also shared how he misses the bond he shared with his father.

Dereck Lively II’s mother, Kathy Drysdale, was a college basketball player who played at Penn State. During her four years at Penn State, she scored around 1,295 points, grabbed 717 boards, and added 89 blocks. Kathy graduated in 1992 with a degree in general arts and sciences.
Following her graduation, Kathy worked with the Philadelphia 76ers from 1993 to 2006, managing game operations and game presentations. By the year 2011, she made a return to Penn State, where she now works as a marketing manager for the women’s volleyball, wrestling, and softball teams.
Sadly, in 2014, just two years after her husband’s passing, Kathy was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After battling the cancer for 8 years till August 2022, she went in remission. Dereck Lively II had a very difficult upbringing and shared how he often didn’t know how to deal with various situations.
