Police identified the victim as Nepal resident and the accused as Lucknow resident Advik Srivastava (21) with him reportedly having two brothers named Ansh and Vansh. While a string of Reddit posts have claimed that Advik’s father is a politician named Manoj Kumar Srivastava which is why the college was trying to suppress the case along with delete evidence, this is yet to be officially confirmed with the name of his parents not known yet.

Lamsal who was from Kathmandu, dreamed of a career in the IT industry to “make her parents proud”. The 20-year-old took her life after returning to her room from a college fest on Sunday and her father, Sunil Lamsal, said that she had promised her mother over the phone to call her after returning to her room from the fest.

“She called her mother at 2:51 pm on Sunday and was absolutely normal then. She said she is going to attend the fest and may not be able to take a call for some time because of network issues… Between 5 pm and 5:30 pm on Sunday, we got a call from the university authorities…,” he said.

KIIT university student death sparks outrage and protests

Earlier this week on Monday, protests escalated as university authorities announced “sine die” for all international students from Nepal. The university directed over 500 students from Nepal to vacate the campus immediately and board buses to reach various railway stations to eventually head home.

However, the Nepal Embassy stepped in, alongside the support of Nepal PM Sharma Oli. As a result, the university withdrew their decision and allowed students to remain on campus. Other sources claim that the state government also played a role in asking the university to allow the students to remain in the hostel. KIIT registrar Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty also issued a statement confirming that the deceased student lodged a complaint with the IRO. She stated that:

The IRO officials then called both students, counselled them and also warned the accused not to do so in the future.”

Mohanty also claimed that the victim took the extreme step because of a “strained relationship” with Advik Srivastava. Meanwhile, the university also issued a statement saying:

The KIIT administration has taken all-out efforts to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume the academic activities. An appeal is made to all our Nepali students who have or plan to leave the campus to return and resume the classes.”

Nepal embassy and PM issues statement

The Nepal embassy in New Delhi issued a statement saying that they have contacted the university administration regarding the issue. The embassy also urged KIIT University to ensure the safety of students from Nepal currently residing there. Meanwhile, the Nepal PM Sharma Oli also posted on X, stating the embassy has dispatched two officers to counsel students. He further stated that they have made arrangements to ensure that students have the option to either remain in their hostel or return home.
