A huge shockwave has taken over the nation as reports emerged earlier claiming that a 21-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Noida was found hanging in her university’s hostel.
For the unaware, social media platforms especially X/Twitter and Reddit are buzzing with “Justice for Jyoti Sharma,” as they are asking the authorities to take strict action.

Her hostel mates found her hanging in her hostel room around 9:00 p.m., following which they contacted the authorities.
As per reports, a second-year BDS student, age 21 Jyoti Sharma from Sharda University in Greater Noida committed suicide allegedly due to harassment by faculty members. The incident reportedly took place on Monday.
Although, the faculty members were later suspended by the University and were apprehended by the authorities as the victim had named them in her suicide note. Reportedly, the young girl hailed from Gurgaon aka Gurugram and took this drastic step in her hostel room, which reportedly comes under Knowledge Park Police Station’s jurisdiction.
Jyoti Sharma, a 21-year-old second-year BDS student at Sharda University in Greater Noida, tragically died by suicide in her hostel room, allegedly due to sustained mental harassment by two faculty members and a suicide note recovered by the Knowledge Park Police named college staff Shairy Vashist who is an assistant professor, Dental Sciences and Dr.Mahinder Singh Chauhan who is an assistant professor, Dental Sciences at the college with both suspended by the college.
Shairy is a graduate (2012-2017) from Sudha Rustagi College of Dental Sciences and Research, Faridabad, and completed Post Graduation (2019-2022) from the School of Dental Sciences, Sharda University. She had been awarded the Gold Medalist in the year 2022.

Mahinder meanwhile is a graduate as well as a Postgraduate in Prosthodontics from Rama Dental College, Kanpur in the year 2015 and had been working in the School of Dental Sciences since December 2020.

Jyoti who was from Gurugram was found hanging in the Mandela Girls Hostel in Greater Noida on the 12th floor late on the night of July 18 and the suicide note she left exposed the mental harassment she endured including accusations of signing fraudulent documents and repeated humiliation by her professors.

In her note, she named the teachers of PCP and Dental Materials, stating she had endured prolonged stress and humiliation that drove her to take this step.
Police registered a case at the Knowledge Park Police Station after receiving the report and a forensic team examined the hostel room to collect potential evidence, and Jyoti’s body was sent for post-mortem.
Her family has leveled serious allegations of academic harassment and mental pressure. Jyoti’s brother Akshay claimed that a professor had accused his sister of forging signatures in her assignments. “My father came on Monday and spoke with the HOD. Yesterday morning, he spoke to Jyoti. Later, we heard from her batchmates that teachers taunted her about forgery and threatened to fail her in practicals. She was mentally pressured,” he said. He also alleged that the police resorted to lathi-charge when the family protested while mother, Sunita Sharma, made an emotional appeal: “I want justice for my daughter. Call CM Yogi and PM Modi. I will not move until I get justice. Police lathi-charged us, which is unacceptable. All BDS students are now scared and want to return home.”
What Did the Authorities Say?
The authorities revealed that they found a suicide note from the crime scene, wherein, the victim accused her teachers of harassment and humiliation. She also penned down that they are the reason behind her taking down this drastic step.
The police officials also revealed that the student in her note also mentioned that the teachers of PCP and Dental Materials are responsible for her death, alleging that they didn’t just mentally harass the victim but also humiliated her, causing stress.
“Mahendra Sir and Sharg Ma’am are responsible for my death. They mentally harassed and humiliated me.”

What Did the University Say?
The Director of Sharda University, Dr. Ajit Kumar, extended the condolences and also empathy for the family of the victim on behalf of the University. He also assured that the guilty would be punished.
In his words, Dr. Kumar said that, two teachers were suspended by them and a high-level committee has been set up by the University under the leadership of VC and they will investigate the matter and take adequate measures on the basis of the report.
However, victim’s family had filed a case under Noida police, and the authorities arrested the two faculty members and the investigation in the case is ongoing.

The Additional DCP of Greater Noida, earlier in an interview revealed that they arrested “two staff members from the management of the university.” He also commented that the arrest was made “on the basis of the complaint lodged by the student’s family members.”
