Leonard Francois, a native of Haiti, and Tamaki Osaka, a native of Japan, are Naomi’s parents. Despite spending some of her childhood in the United States, Naomi says she does not consider herself an American. She describes herself as Black and Asian. She, as per marieclaire.com told:

“I don’t necessarily feel like I’m American. I wouldn’t know what that feels like.”

When Tamaki and Francois first met, he was in college and she was a senior in high school. When Tamaki’s family found out about her relationship with Francois, they cut off communication with her for about 15 years. The two dated Secretly for years. Naomi was three years old when they relocated to Long Island to live with Francois’ family (she was born in Osaka). But in 2008, the family got back in touch with Tamaki’s relatives.
