During the Protest, two women from the group, who were seen wearing Just Stop Oil t-shirts, threw 2 tins of Heinz tomato soup over Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers, the famous 1888 painting.

The painting has an estimated net worth of somewhat around 72.5 million pounds.

At the protests, one of the two women, identified as 21-year-old Phoebe Palmer, heard shouting, “What is worth more? Art or life?” after continuing, “Are you more concerned about the protection of a painting? Or the protection of our planet and people?”

The demonstration at the United Kingdom’s National Museum was part of the continuing protests seeking an end to issuance of all new oil and gas licenses.

Speaking about the group, Just Stop Oil, was founded on February 14, 2022. The climate action group is merely an 8 months old group.

The group is all geared up towards civil resistance while aiming for insisting the government of the UK to stop new fossil fuel licensing and production.

The first protest organised by the group was held back in a month of oil terminal disruptions across the United Kingdom. The group has gained quite a lot of attention due to their attacks on art galleries.

Demonstrations done by the group that had made the headlines:

BAFTA Awards: At the time, 2 supporters of Just Stop Oil sought to disrupt the 75th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

Football disruptions: On March 20, two members of the group went on to attempt to disrupt a football match that was being held at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in London but they were intercepted.

The very next day, one supporter of the group disrupted a football match that was being held at Goodison Park in Liverpool. At the time, the member of the group ran onto the pitch and tied himself to the goal post by his neck.

On March 22, another supporter of the group ran into the pitch during a football game in Molineux Stadium Wolverhampton.

Following that, on March 24, 6 supporters of the Just Stop Oil group disrupted another match held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London.

Since April 1, the members of Just Stop Oil group have been blockading 10 critical oil facilities intending on cutting off petrol supply to the southeast of England.

The supporters of the group stated that they were inspired to take the aforementioned tactic from the UK lorry drivers’ protests that paralysed petrol distribution.

F1 British Grand Prix: some members of the group, on July 3, sat in the middle of the track during the 2022 British Grand Prix. At the time, the race was stopped seconds before they sat because of a crash, however, their demonstration had no impact on the tournament.

Since July 2022, the members of Just Stop Oil group seem to have begun targeting artworks in public galleries.
