Authorities identified Wess Roley as the 20-year-old sniper who allegedly lured firefighters into a deadly trap by igniting a brush fire on Canfield Mountain, near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Investigators believed Roley had set the blaze intentionally, knowing it would draw emergency crews to the scene—where he then opened fire, fatally shooting two responders and critically injuring a third.

Wess Roley, the 20-year-old suspect linked to the fatal ambush that claimed the lives of two firefighters in Idaho, had once aspired to become a firefighter himself, according to statements attributed to his grandfather. The deadly incident unfolded in Coeur d’Alene on Sunday, where responders rushing to contain a brush fire were allegedly met with sniper-style gunfire. A third firefighter sustained serious injuries during the assault, while Roley was later found dead at the scene.

The suspect, who was found dead at the scene, was identified as Wess Roley, 20, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Wess Roley, identified as the 20-year-old behind the deadly ambush in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, had reportedly set a brush fire on Canfield Mountain. Authorities stated that the incident unfolded on the evening of June 29, 2025, when firefighters arrived at the scene and came under sudden sniper fire. The attack resulted in the deaths of two firefighters and left another critically injured.

Records show Wess Roley, 20, most recently lived in Phoenix, Arizona, but appears to have family in Idaho about an hour’s drive from the location of the shooting. Jason was working for his father, Jason V Roley’s tree company in Idaho, called the Idaho Tree Service LLC.

The 20 year-old sniper lived in Arizona with his mother Heather Lynn Kuuipo Cuchiara and the two appeared close, with Cuchiara wishing her son a happy birthday just last month. The two had even vacationed in Hawaii last year.

No public social media profiles have been unearthed for Roley and he does not appear to have left any kind of manifesto explaining his reason behind the shooting.

Roley’s father Jason Roley, 39, lives about an hour’s drive away from the scene of the shooting, in the town of Priest River, Idaho and is married to a woman called Sara Roley. Wess’ stepmother and Jason are parents to two young children.

Roley’s father who lives in Priest River, Idaho, said that he wasn’t close with his son and hadn’t seen him since a family gathering last year. Jason is from Anchorage, Alaska.

Jason was a Former tech at Grand Canyon Harley-Davidson from 2019 – 2021, a former Cavalry Scout at U.S. Army and former climber at Roley’s Tree Care “Your Local Tree Care Doctor”.

Photos showing Roley, a white American and his family have surfaced on social media and in some of the images, two individuals, believed to be his mother and stepfather, are seen wearing MAGA hats and posing in front of the White House. Another image appears to show a MAGA sign displayed outside a residence and posts also claim that Roley’s parents recently traveled to Washington, D.C., from Phoenix, Arizona.

While some reports also claimed Wes was a transgender, nothing officially confirms these claims with him a biological male. Although his religion isn’t known, the surname Roley is often associated with Christianity.

After an hours-long barrage of gunfire, Roley was found using mobile phone data but it was unclear whether the suspect took his own life or had been hit by an officer.

Officials have not yet disclosed a clear motive for the attack, but unconfirmed accounts suggested that Roley may have previously resided in Florida and New York. He was also believed to have relocated from Arizona to Idaho to work with his father’s company. As investigators continued to piece together the details, the incident left the local community shaken and raised deep concerns about the risks faced by emergency personnel during such high-stakes operations.

Age 20 Wess of Idaho has a prior arrest for assault in 2024. This incident involved him allegedly attacking a woman with a knife, for which he was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon and he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor assault, receiving a sentence of 180 days in jail with 150 days suspended. He was also ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and complete anger management classes.

He had also made threats against his family leading to a no-contract order being issued against him. Wess Roley’s mom is Heather and alleged stepfather is Tony aka Anthony Modesto Cuchiara whose Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2009 had almost $130K in consumer credit debt whilst averaging less than $10K per year over the previous 3 years. Heather and Wess’ father, Jason had divorced each other. His mother Heather Lynn is an archer.

His grandfather, Dale Roley, shared that Wess came from a family with roots in the arborist trade and had been engaged in tree service work while exploring his career options. He had reportedly expressed a desire to serve as a forest firefighter and had been pursuing that goal before the tragedy occurred. While Dale acknowledged that his grandson owned both a shotgun and a long rifle, he indicated that it remained unclear whether those weapons had been used in the ambush.

He also noted that their weekly conversations had recently paused due to Wess losing his phone, but emphasized that the young man had been surrounded by loved ones and maintained an active social life. A recent vacation in Hawaii with his mother was cited as evidence of close family ties. Describing Wess as anything but a recluse, Dale expressed shock and disbelief over the allegations, stating there had been no warning signs to suggest such an act.

Dale also voiced hope that a mistake had been made in identifying his grandson as the shooter. Public records suggested that Wess had spent part of his youth in the Phoenix area. A running website indicated that he had participated in track and was a member of his high school’s class of 2024. Court documents shed light on a troubled home environment during his early years.

His mother Heather had reportedly filed for divorce in 2015 when Wess was ten, alleging threats and violence by her ex-husband, Jason including claims that he had pushed her, punched holes in walls, and issued disturbing threats involving a sniper rifle and arson. A judge initially issued a protective order barring the father from contacting either his wife or son, though that order was later modified to remove Wess, after the father submitted a court filing denying any danger and disputing the accusations.

The divorce was finalized later that year, with custody awarded to Wess’ mother, who was named his primary residential guardian. His father, now living in Priest River, Idaho—roughly an hour from the shooting site—told a reporter that he had not been close with his son and hadn’t seen him since a family gathering the previous year. He did not comment further on the earlier court allegations.
