On Sunday, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for the murder of NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister, Baba Siddique. The 66-year-old politician was shot dead outside his office in Mumbai’s Bandra during Dussehra celebrations on Saturday night.

A Facebook post by a Lawrence Bishnoi gang member named Shubham Lonkar, which quickly went viral, explained that Siddique was targeted due to his close association with Bollywood actor Salman Khan and alleged ties to underworld figures like Dawood Ibrahim.
Following the viral post, Mumbai Police stated that they are investigating its authenticity. Siddique was approached by three men who exited a vehicle and, under the noise of bursting firecrackers, opened fire at the NCP leader. Despite being rushed to Lilavati Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Sources within the Mumbai Police revealed to India Today TV that Siddiqueโs murder was orchestrated by contract killers.
The police are also probing the involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, as the arrested suspects claimed affiliation with the group during interrogation. Two individuals โ Gurmail Baljit Singh, 23, from Haryana, and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap, 19, from Uttar Pradesh โ have been arrested, while a third, Shiv Kumar from Uttar Pradesh, remains at large.
Gurmail Baljit Singh is a 23-year-old and resident of Haryana’s Kaithal Narad village who was currently out on bail. He was arrested by the Mumbai Police soon after the murder of NCP leader and was in the Kaithal jail in a murder case in 2022. He came in contact with the Lawrence gang in the jail after which he went to Mumbai.
Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap age 19 is a native of Uttar Pradesh while Shiv Kumar alias Shiv Gautam who is in his early twenties, is on the run. He used to work for a scrap dealer in Pune at Harish’s shop according to his mother. The person who gave them the contract had arranged the meeting of Gurmail with Shiva and Dharamraj.
Why Bishnoi gang killed Baba Siddique?
Authorities are continuing their efforts to identify the mastermind behind the attack. The investigation has revealed that the attack was premeditated, with the shooters receiving payment in advance and being supplied with firearms days before the crime. Salman Khan has faced several threats from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in recent years. The most recent occurred in April, when two men on motorcycles opened fire outside his Mumbai residence.
In June 2022, Khan received a handwritten threat, warning that he would meet the same fate as singer Sidhu Moose Wala, who was murdered in May 2022, allegedly by the Bishnoi gang. In a 2023 interview with a news channel, Lawrence Bishnoi addressed these threats, claiming Salman Khan had disrespected the Bishnoi community by killing a blackbuck, an animal sacred to them.
