Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway story
In early 2011, Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya, an Indian couple who are living in Norway put out a tearful plea to Indian authorities for asking them to help them to bring their children back home. But in May of that year, Norwegian Child Welfare Services (CWS) had “confiscated” the couple’s children, Abhigyan and Aishwarya citing “neglect” and “emotional disconnect” between the mother and the kids.
Their kids were badly forced into foster care by CWS, where it was ruled that they would remain there till they turned 18 years of age. Anurup and Sagarika were also not allowed to meet or see them.
It was followed by two years of chaos and arduous custody battles, the intervention of the Indian government, numerous protests, and a sharp spotlight on a number of issues raised along with cultural differences, racism, and many more.
Ten years later, Sagarika’s painful fight to get her kids returned to her is being made into a film in which Rani Mukherjee is starred in the lead role. Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway is all set to release in March 2023, almost exactly 11 years after Sagarika’s ordeal started.
In late 2007, Anurup Bhattacharya, who is a geophysicist got married to Sagarika and the two shifted to Norway to begin a new life. In 2008, Sagarika returned to the city of Kolkata when she became pregnant for the first time with Abhigyan, and she remained there for a year.
During this period, her child started showing “autism-like” symptoms. The two returned to Norway in 2009 to join Anurup. By 2010, the duo placed Abhigyan in the family kindergarten and Sagarika became pregnant with her second child. Because Anurup was on his long hours of working, she spent a lot of time alone with the boy.
At this time, Abhigyan started showing concerning characteristics, wherein he would start banging his head on the ground whenever he was very frustrated. He also showed several signs of difficulty in communicating, and he did not make eye contact.
Norway has an extremely strict child protection system for these types of kids, and a strong history of blanket regulations for citizens who are living in the country. As an example, even a mild slap in the region is also illegal.
The regulations fail to consider that in several countries and cultures, parents believe in the ‘spare the rod, spoil the child’ approach. Regardless, in the countryside of Norway, an anonymous tip is just enough to send the team of CWS to the doorstep.
Sagarika who had gone months without seeing her kids is living a peaceful life with her kids. Watch Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway for more.
