Viacom 18 bag The IPL digital Rights for $2.6 Billion
IPL has overtaken many cash-rich top leagues in the world with its record-breaking bidding figures. The TV rights have been retained by Star India for a whopping $3 Billion. BCCI has earned a huge amount of money from the broadcasters. IPL has become the second most expensive league in the world after NFL. English Premier League has been dethroned from the second position by IPL in terms of most expensive media rights. BCCI will ultimately earn over 100 cr INR/ Match.
Voot app will telecast the IPL on the OTT platform
Viacom 18’s Voot application will telecast the upcoming IPL seasons for the viewers who watch it on phones and laptops. Earlier Disney+ Hotstar used to telecast the Tournament on the OTT platform. Viacom will have to pay 20,500 crore INR to BCCI for the IPL digital rights. There will be a total of 410 matches in the span of 2023-2027 in IPL. The cost per match will be around 50.5 crore INR.
While there are reports on it being shown for free to Jio users on Jio TV or Paramount+ which will launch in India in 2023, Voot is set to show it on a subscription basis.
Star India retains the TV rights of IPL
The TV rights of IPL have been sold out for a massive figure of 23,575 crore INR. BCCI will earn up to 57.5 crore INR per match. The combined figure for both platforms is 44,075 crore INR. The previous deal with star fetched 16,000 crore INR which is way lesser than the deal this time. BCCI will be generating a hefty amount of revenue with IPL as always because of the Popularity of the League in the country.
