The Swimmers on Netflix tells the story of Yusra and Sara Mardini, know where are they now today in 2022
The duo fled their war-torn native Syria in 2015 in an effort to reach Europe and secure safe passage for the rest of their family as refugees.
Where Are Yusra And Sara Mardini Today Now 2022 And Their Story As The Swimmers Drops On Netflix
The sisters, in particular Yusra, maintained the hope of competing for Syria on the swimming squad. She participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro despite the challenging and even dangerous journey they took.
The sisters’ swimming prowess came in handy throughout their journey, as they assisted in saving the lives of 18 other refugees when their overcrowded dinghy started sinking in the Aegean Sea. To get everyone to safety on the Greek island of Lesbos, the pair spent hours swimming while they were still connected to the boat.
Yusra And Sara Mardini, Where Are They Now?
Yusra
According to reports, Yusra Mardini will be 24 in 2022 and resides in Berlin, Germany. She is, however, majoring in film and television at the University of Southern California in the US, according to Women’s Health.
Yusra managed to win one of her heats in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. However, with a time of 1:09.21, she ultimately placed 41st out of 45 competitors. Mardini has kept swimming and even participated in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she produced a far faster time of 1:06.78 in the same race. But, she was unable to qualify for the final 16 swimmers.
The mere fact that Yusra has been able to compete at all is an enormous accomplishment in and of itself. Even though she may not have taken home a medal from either of the Olympics she has attended.
Sara
Sara, her sister, is 27 years old and had to stop swimming after moving to Germany because of a shoulder injury. In a shocking development, Sara was detained in 2018 while performing humanitarian work on the Greek island of Lesbos.
According to the reports, she was detained for more than three months after being accused of spying, drug trafficking, and membership in a criminal organization. Amnesty International has called the accusations “trumped up” and “farcical.”
Despite numerous delays, Sara’s trial has not yet begun, but as per the reports, she could receive a 25-year maximum term.
Netflix Now Offers The Swimmers.
In The Swimmers, both sisters worked behind the scenes to help bring their narrative to the big screen, and Yusra even doubled for herself in several of the swimming scenes. After leaving Syria themselves, the sisters’ parents and younger sister, Shaed, also made their way to Germany.
The Swimmers was released on November 23, 2022, and is now accessible on Netflix.
