John Balcerzak along with his fellow officer Joseph Gabrish handed over a 14-year-old naked and bleeding boy, Konerak Sinthasomphone to Milwaukee’s Cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer.

As the Milwaukee’s police officers handed over Konerak to Dahmer, he went on not to just murder the teenager but also to brutally kill 4 more victims.

The police officials handed over the boy to Jeffrey even after the objection was raised by Dahmer’s neighbor Glenda Cleveland and other women, who were present at the scene.

Shortly thereafter the boy was killed by Dahmer. He even had a sexual act with his corpse. The media named the police officials, Gabrish and Balcerzak as the “Dahmer cops,” for the negligence that they showed in the case.

However, despite the controversy that generated major headlines at the time of Dahmer’s arrest, both men went on and enjoyed their lengthy careers in Wisconsin law enforcement.

Previously we have discussed about John Balcerzak and his career achievements even after showing the gross negligence, now we are going to discuss the achievements of Joseph Gabrish.

According to the Advocates, 2 officers i.e John and Jospeh were fired by Police Chief, Philip Arreola however they got reinstated by a court order. The ruling was made by a reserve judge Robert Parins.

According to a 1994’s report by Associated Press, the judge stated that, “the firings were too severe a punishment and that former Officers John Balcerzak and Joseph Gabrish should be reinstated, with back pay of about $55,000 each.”

As per the outlet, The chief had fired the officers for “failing to follow police procedures.”

Following the Associated Press report, the Washington Post reported that Police Chief, Arreola fired the cops for “acts of omission” that included “a failure to take witnesses’ names at the scene and failure to take the 14-year-old boy into protective custody.”

According to a report by OnMilwaukee.com, 2 months before Dahmer’s arrest, the 2 officers, “responded to a call in an alley next to Dahmer’s apartment.”

The report was about a “man down” and “badly beaten.” The man in the report mentioned was 14-year-old Sinthasomphone.

As per the same report by outlet, the police officers “arrived at the scene to see what appeared to be a young man, naked and dazed wrapped in a blanket with Milwaukee Fire Department paramedics. Jeffrey Dahmer was standing at his side.”

As per outlet, Jeffrey had met Konerak at a mall, where he lured the 14-year-old to his home and drugged him. When Dahmer wenr to buy liquor, Konerak escaped from his apartment.

However Dahmer easily convinced the officers, Gabrish and Balcerzak that it was a “domestic situation,” and police officials handed over Konerak back to the serial killer, who subsequently killed him.

According to a report by WTMJ-TV, the police officers ignored Cleveland’s vigorous objections nor did they checked the facts with Konerak.

The television station reported that the boy was “naked and bleeding,” but Dahmer “told the officers that the boy was an adult and his lover and he was drunk.”

In November 1992, in a report, Associated Press hadn an interview with Cleveland, where neighbor of Dahmer said, she was “so worried about the naked, dazed youth” that she even considered protesting to the police department.

She said, “I thought about a couple of stupid things, like handcuffing myself or sitting on the steps and not moving.”

In their report, AP quoted that Cleveland and her niece Nicole, her daughter Sandra, and neighbor Tina Spivey told the police that, “they felt Sinthasomphone was trying to get away from Dahmer.”

However Police official’s ignored their statement and objections and rest is history. Following the gross negligence shown by the police officers, John Balcerzak and Jospeh Gabrish they were fired but eventually reinstated.

The former went on to become the Head of the Milwaukee Police Association, the union of rank-and-file police officers.

As per a report by WTMJ-TV television station, the negligent officer in Dahmer’s case and the Head of Milwaukee Police Association, John retired from the force in 2017.

On the other hand, Gabrish left the Milwaukee force and was named an interim Police Chief in the Grafton Police Department, where he served as a Captain.

According to a report by the Ozaukee Press, Gabrish said in 2019 that, “I’m looking forward to working with the Village Board and the people here to make this a safe community.”

As per the same report, “Gabrish joined the department as an officer in 1993 and became second in command in 2007. Prior to joining the department, Gabrish was an officer with the Milwaukee Police Department for nearly 11 years,.”

The report further added, “Gabrish is also the chief of police in the Town of Trenton, where he lives. He started the Trenton Police Department in 1997. Gabrish is now retired.”

According to reports, Gabrish testified that Dahmer was “polite and gave us no reason to suspect anything of him at all. He was very cooperative with us.”
