TikTok is a video-sharing app that is probably the most popular in the world right now, and it has a huge impact on young people with trends coming every day such as the recent Sleepy Chicken challenge
TikTok has more than a billion active users in 154 countries, so trends that start there can spread quickly. But while many TikTok trends are harmless and often make people’s lives more fun, the video-sharing app is notorious for starting trends that can kill.
What is the sleepy chicken challenge and its meaning as it goes viral on TikTok and Reddit
What’s up with people cooking chicken with NyQuil? from OutOfTheLoop
The words “sleepy” and “chicken” are both harmless and might even be enjoyable on their own. However, putting them together with the word “TikTok” is a surefire way to end up in the hospital or even dead. The challenge is to make a chicken recipe with NyQuil, which is a medicine for colds and allergies.

Dextromethorphan and Acetaminophen are two of the parts that make up NyQuil. While the first one works directly on the brain to make you less likely to cough, the second one could kill you by hurting your liver. WebMD says that NyQuil can cause sleepiness, dizziness, blurred vision, an upset stomach, nausea, nervousness, constipation, or a dry mouth, nose, or throat. So, unless you want to start another opioid crisis in the country or get a special mention (possibly after your death) for being stupid, it’s best to leave the challenge alone.
FDA warns against the sleepy chicken challenge
The Food and Drug Administration warned the public about the dangers of high doses of diphenhydramine and told people very strongly not to use NyQuil to cook chicken.

In a piece called called “A Recipe for Danger: Social Media Challenges with Medicine,” the FDA said that boiling a medicine can make it much stronger and change its other properties. It reflected that even if you don’t eat the chicken, breathing in the vapours of the drugs while cooking could give you a lot of the drugs and told that some teenagers who took part in the challenge had to be rushed to the hospital.
